What has been one of the most powerful experiences in your journey as an ADHD Adult?
Time and again, over the past two years, I’ve helped people connect to amazing ADHD Communities. I’ve also met many folks who were looking for something different. Even those folks who were looking for something different, something more? They found the impact of connecting with a community of fellow ADHD people extremely powerful, meaningful, and life-changing!
As ADHD folks, we so often feel out of place, or even out of phase with the world around us. We often feel misunderstood, judged, ridiculed, punished, and/or ostracized — simply because of how differently we think, feel, and function. To experience such immediate, warm, supportive and understanding social connections is very unusual, and frequently life-changing!
Finding a diverse group of people from around the globe, who, somehow, seem to immediately understand you, accept you, and share so many of the same experiences, idiosyncrasies, even though you’re from wildly different places & cultures on the planet? There’s really nothing quite like it! So few ADHD people are used to having this kind of experience.
The Importance of Community for ADHD Productivity, Habits, and Navigating Life Change
In April 2021, I had a conversation about ADHD, Productivity, & Habits with Habits Expert, Neuroscience Researcher, and Founder of Brain by Design,James Garrett. While it’s not his specialty, James Garrett has extensive experience training and coaching ADHD Adults, Kids, & Coaches.
He affirmed my own experience as both an ADHD person and ADHD Coach:
What is one of the most powerful things an ADHD person can do to overcome a lot of the resistance we experience with intentional habit change, changes in routines, & etc?
Connect with a community of supportive people on the same journey. But not just any community. There are specific things we, as ADHD people, so often need from that community, which tend to be very difficult to find.
Here are a few of the qualities that came up in our conversation:
A Community that understands some of the more difficult challenges we face. Because of differences in our neurological wiring, neurochemistry, and behaviors, “support” communities can often be unhelpful or even toxic for us. Especially when we run into a uniquely ADHD hiccup in the process. So often we hear amazingly unhelpful advice like, “Why don’t you just do the thing?”, “Stop being so lazy”, and other classically unhelpful tips. Instead of helping us facilitate the learning or change want to make, these communities often kill our motivation, put a bad taste in our mouth, and give us another proof that we’ve failed, and all the usual self-depricating thoughts and feelings.
A Community that can provide meaningfully helpful, practical, tactical, & judgment-free support from both peers and professionals. There are SO MANY ADHD “support” communities out there, where folks come to vent about how hard ADHD life can be, the gaslighting they experience everyday, etc, etc. And we need safe places to do this, in places we know we won’t be judged, and we know there are other folks who understand the difficulty and pain of our challenges. However, we also need the kind of support that reminds us of our strengths. The things we’re good at. Actively helpful support to get moving on that thing we’ve been unable to start. To help us identify where we’re getting stuck, and find a better way forward. Or just someone for body-double support, so we can “just do” a thing that we need to do.
There are many other things that ADHD people often NEED from their relationships & community that are simply absent. And the absence of these things only increase the difficulty in managing the challenges we face every day with Planning, Productivity, Organization, Motivation, Energy Management, Processing Emotions, etc, etc.
Sometimes we can find a community that offers a few of these things, but it often seems impossible to find a community that offers the kind of support we need to overcome these ADHD challenges, and live the life we want.

When I say “Now”, I mean we’re opening the doors on Wednesday, September 1st. 😲
Sometimes, we’re a little impulsive 🙃 😇
Also, I’ll be posting more high quality content more regularly very soon. And, of course, much of it will be related to our motivations for building both the ART of ADHD Community & the ART of ADHD Academy, including:
The content and community will revolve around these themes, fostering a safe, supportive environment where ADHD Adults can connect with others who “get” them. We will also provide on-going, high quality, ADHD Support, Education, and Training for ADHD Adults.
What will be offered in the Community?
September 1st is just Phase 1 for the ART of ADHD Community.

Several, regularly scheduled, exclusive opportunities for Virtual Body Double sessions each month
In the coming months, we’ll be making some rounds to spread the news about what we’re doing at the ART of ADHD. So if you know anyone who has a podcast or other platform, and they’re looking for interesting guests, have them contact us at email@example.com.
I went mostly dark on Social Media a few months ago. Since that's a virtual eternity on social media, folks have been reaching out with increasing frequency to make sure I’m okay.
The short answer? I’m doing pretty well. And an update is long overdue.
A big thank you to all of you that reached out to check on me.
The rest of this post is broken up into sections. Feel free to jump to the section(s) that interest you most, or just read the whole thing. Here’s what I’m covering in this post:
Okay… Then why the extra months of social media silence?
What about ADHD Brains Radio? When can we expect more episodes?
Opportunities to Support ADHD Brains Radio
What happened as a result of the ThinckFinck Academy survey that was sent out before the family emergency?
During the first week of May, my father-in-law nearly died, and spent a week in the ICU. Initially, it was unclear whether or not he’d make it. We live on the East Coast of the United States. My in-laws live in the southern-Mid-West. As soon as we found out, we dropped everything, packed up the kids, and drove half way across the country (vaccinated), so my wife could see him for what was potentially the last time.
We stayed with my in-laws for 3 weeks as he recovered, and spent a some additional time making rounds to visit my family, while we were out there. Because of COVID, it had been over 18-months since we’d been able to see any of them. We finally returned home after the first week of June.
Okay… Then why the extra time in social media silence?
A lot of reasons, to be honest.
Streamlining Our Home: We had planned on taking the month of May to simplify our living space, purge non-essentials, and optimize our 900 sq. ft. apartment, so that we can run our businesses from home. We wanted to ensure my wife and I each had our own workspaces, with dedicated times for working. We also wanted the kids to have a dedicated place where they can play together; plus, a “safe space” for each of them, which each can use as desired for school work, play, or whatever.
New Plans for an ADHD Membership Community: Initially, I was just going to start offering courses & group coaching this fall at the ThinckFinck Academy. As we gained resources and enough interest from alumni, I was going to start an ADHD Membership Community where we could support each other with with things like Productivity, Mental & Emotional Fitness, Cultivating Better Habits, etc. In April 2020, someone stepped in, wanting to ensure this community becomes available much sooner. We’ve been working hard, so we can launch the community sometime in August 2021. And now, the community will be available before the Academy begins offering courses & group coaching publicly. Stay tuned for more info!
ADHD-Friendly Peak Performance Training Opportunity: A fellow colleague, and well respected ADHD Coach connected me with an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. A Peak Performance Coach Training & Certification for Mental & Emotional Fitness is currently being mostly-funded by a massive grant. Rather than having to wait a year or two to afford the training, the grant made the Coaching Training & Certification affordable for me now! This means, beginning in the Autumn of 2021, I will be offering an ADHD version of this Peak Performance training for everyday folks in the new Academy! Stay tuned for more info!
Re-Branding & Re-building ThinckFinck Academy: Between all the life-events, new ventures, and new opportunities happening this summer, we decided to rebrand the ThinckFinck Academy, We're changing it to something that better matches the vision we have for both the Community and the Academy. I'll be sharing more about this very soon in future posts.
Initially, I had planned to re-launch the podcast in June 2021. However, plans shifted significantly with cascade of unplanned events & opportunities that have continued ot snowball since April 2021. This means I haven’t been able to dedicate the time I had originally planned for doing the podcast.
ADHD Brains Radio is an integral part of my vision and mission for what I’m here to do. So, while it’s not going away, I’ve had to hit the pause button for a little longer, while we’re preparing to launch the Community + Academy for ADHD Adults. All that being said….
Opportunities to Support ADHD Brains Radio
Volunteers: If you’d like to volunteer to support the podcast by finding and/or reading top-notch ADHD articles & blog posts for new episodes, please reach out to me and let me know.
Financial Support: If you’d like to become a monthly supporter, so that I can hire folks to help me churn out episodes more regularly, you can donate through our Patreon. If you’d like to discuss larger donations to help us find some more permanent support, and enable us to do more, please contact me directly.
What kinds of work is ADHD Brains Radio doing?
Curating & Recording: Curate the best written articles & blog posts about ADHD, and record them as episodes, with permission from the author and/or publication, including a promo of the author/creator.
Interviews Discussing and/or Deconstructing What Makes You Successful in ADHD: Do you feel like your ADHD (or learning how to manage it) contributed significantly to your success in some way? Maybe you're not quite sure how you REALLY became successful in the ways that you are? Would you like to understand you own unconscious methods for success? Besides converting our conversation(s) to a podcast episode or mini-series, we may partner with the person interviewed to co-create a product, process, or framework that can help other ADHD people more consistently achieve the things they set out to do.
Additional, themed, short-form & long-form segments will develop as time & funding allow.
What happened as a result of the ThinckFinck Academy survey that was sent out before the family emergency?
In preparing to launch ThinckFinck Academy, I was given an opportunity to host my courses on a new StartUp platform (Maven). Part of Maven's selection process was to solicit feedback about our courses from at least 100 folks who were highly likely to sign up for the course. I received some fantastic input from over 120 people!
However, with the family emergency popping up, an additional business partnership, doing a complete makeover of ThinckFinck Academy, and the other intensive peak performance coach certification trainings I'm already taking…. I simply didn't have the capacity to add another project this summer with Maven.
Even though it won't be in partnership with Maven, and we've completely re-branded it, the Academy will still be launching this Fall.
I'll be sending a personal email and thank you to the survey participants soon. That email will include responses to some of their feedback, and some early announcements about what we're doing next.
There’s a LOT going on behind the scenes here with ThinckFinck. Even more than what I’ve mentioned in this post.
While life outside of social media continues to be pretty intense… The majority of the things keeping me from Social Media have been good.
I miss all my fellow tweeps in ADHD Twitter community, and all the virtual 1:1's and social events that kept spawning as a result of showing up on ADHD Twitter every day for over a year.
In the coming weeks and months, I'll be slowly easing back in to Twitter & LinkedIn, although not daily. At least not for a while.
My DMs and email are still open. So feel free to reach out, if you'd like to connect. You can find all my links here.
